(23 Jun 1979) The disorder of the Iranian revolution has produced a boom for caviar smuggling, the Caspian fisherman's favourite sideline. The government has a monopoly of the caviar business and anyone outside the state-owned fishing company is guilty of a crime, but in the confusion that has followed the revolution, the law has broken down and the "pirate" caviar dealers have grasped their opportunity. Season 4 of 6 of The F Word with Gordon Ramsay and celebrity cooking brigades. Gordon Ramsay takes a trip to Spain to how caviar is farmed and produced. He visited a Sturgeon farm where he discovers that only when they reach about twenty years of age are they ready to be de-egged. The setup for the removal is very surgical, and Gordon is allowed to cut open a sturgeon - full of about £10,000 of caviar!
A team of researchers from universities around the world have joined together to determine why the Caspian Sea is shrinking. In the study published last month in the journal Geophysical Research Letters, the team says, "With continued warming in the northern hemisphere, one can expect yearly accumulated evaporation rates over the Caspian Sea to continue increasing for the foreseeable future." Evaporation is closely related to rising temperatures, a trend expected to continue with climate change. The Caspian Sea and its resources are of much interest to the surrounding countries, and while scientists can't be certain, the future of the sea appears to be at risk. http://gizmodo.com/scientists-think-they-know-why-the-caspian-sea-is-shrin-1798538633 http://www.wochit.com This video was produc...

2015 is the 50th anniversary of the rediscovery of the Caspian horse. To celebrate this, TV director and Caspian Horse Society council member, Farokh Khorooshi has teamed up with renowned equine photographer Colin Barker to produce a commemorative calendar depicting Caspians throughout the world, including their native Iran. There are fewer than 1,000 Caspian horses around the world and so steps need to be taken to preserve and continue the breed, so proceeds from the calendar are going towards setting up the Caspian Horse Sperm Bank Project. Oscar and Glen head to the remote highlands of Russia’s exotic Dagestan to check out village life and the cuisine. They make a local version of khinkal, a favourite Caucasian dish similar to dumplings. All they need is flour, water, and meat, but it’s more difficult than expected. To get the water, Glen takes a donkey ride to the local spring. Things take an even stranger turn when the pair find the meat hanging as a big slab drying on the side of a house… next to the cow pats used as fuel! But in the end, everything turns out grand, and the ‘gastronauts’ pronounce the result ‘delicious’. Then the pair is whisked from the mountains down to the seashore, where they explore an ancient fortress in the oldest surviving city in modern Russia, Derbent. Afterwards, they learn to make a special l...

Cascadia horses celebrates the first foal from Aleah! She is a little miracle baby, born to an older teenaged maiden mare who didn't get into foal on two previous breeding attempts. She will carry on the Caspian breed. The filly is so tiny with such long legs, it took almost two hours for her to stand, and an additional 20 minutes more to get her first drink of milk. Aleah is a good mom, but didn't know what to do. It took several hours of training her to stand still enough for her foal to nurse.
This episode presents the natural beauty of the shifting sand dunes of the Curonian Spit, the romantic beaches of the Latvian Baltic Sea and the island worlds of Estonia. Time and again, this deserted and almost untouched nature fascinates. In the winter, ringed seals give birth to their young on the pack ice. In the spring, Konik wild horse stallions fight fierce battles amongst themselves, while colourful European rollers fly through the dune forests. Lynxes wander through the coastal forests and in the orchid meadows turncoats and hoopoes find more than enough food. On the islands around Saaremaa in Estonia, grey seals hunt for fish. They share the archipelago with Europe’s largest tern, the Caspian tern.

Offshore drilling is a mechanical process where a wellbore is drilled below the seabed. It is typically carried out in order to explore for and subsequently extract petroleum which lies in rock formations beneath the seabed. Most commonly, the term is used to describe drilling activities on the continental shelf, though the term can also be applied to drilling in lakes, inshore waters and inland seas. Offshore drilling presents environmental challenges, both from the produced hydrocarbons and the materials used during the drilling operation. Controversies include the ongoing US offshore drilling debate. There are many different types of facilities from which offshore drilling operations take place. These include bottom founded drilling rigs (jackup barges and swamp barges), combined drilli...
Catfish - Silurus Glanis The wels catfish (Silurus glanis), also called sheatfish, is a large catfish found in wide areas of central, southern, and eastern Europe, and near the Baltic and Caspian Seas. It is a scaleless fresh and brackish water fish recognizable by its broad, flat head and wide mouth. Wels catfish can live for at least thirty years and have very good hearing. The wels catfish lives on annelid worms, gastropods, insects, crustaceans, and fish including other catfishes; the larger ones also eat frogs, mice, rats and aquatic birds such as ducks. It is found from the United Kingdom all the way east to Kazakhstan and south to FYR Macedonia. http://tve.org/ Out in the northern reaches of the Caspian Sea, where Russia borders Kazakhstan there’s a war going on – and it’s all over fish. An epic struggle is being played out between competing gangs of poachers and the police. Caught in the middle is a rare and ancient fish, which is now dying out in its last stronghold. The stakes are high because this the sturgeon: a species prized for its flesh, but most of all for its black, glistening roe, better known as caviar. One giant beluga sturgeon, brimming with caviar can be worth up to $30,000 on the international market. Earth Report uncovers the story of how the sturgeon has been brought to the brink of extinction after 250 million years on the planet, and what chance there is to save it. From 2001
